1904 - 2004
Centenary of Allama Iqbal’s Tarana-e-Hind "Sare Jahan se achchha...", was celebrated
by the Council of Democratic Writers in its function held at Anjuman Islamia’s hall
in Gorakhpur. A large number of speakers and litterateurs spoke on this occasion. Former
head of Gorakhpur University’s Urdu department, Prof. Ahmar Lari said that Iqbal
wrote this patriotic poem in August 1904 and it was first published in Abdul Haleem
Sharar’s weekly journal Ittehad on 16 August 1904. However, Iqbal himself sent the
authoritative version of his poem to Munshi Daya Narayen Nigam who published it in
his monthly Zamana Kanpur in September 1904 issue.

Premchand
- Premchand and Urdu writing
He was married when he was 15 and was in the 9th grade. His father also died and
after passing the intermediate he had to stop his study. He got a job as a teacher
in the Primary School, after a series of promotion he became Deputy Inspectors of
Schools. In response to Mahatma Gandhi's call for "non-cooperation" with the British
rulers, he
quit his job. After that he devoted his full attention to writing. His first story
appeared in the magazine Zamana published from Kanpur.
Before Premchand, Nazeer Ahmad, Sarshar and Mirza Hadi Ruswa have written
novels in Urdu. But Premchand has a unique place when it comes to Urdu novels
and short stories. His emphasis was on presenting the realities of life and he
made Indian villages the focus of his writings. His novels describe the problems
faced by villagers and poor and what could be the possible solutions. How the
priests, local businessfolks ( mahajan ) and the landlords were exploiting the
villagers. He also emphasised Hindu-Muslim unity. His famous works
include Gau-daan ( Godan ), Maidan-e-Amal, Bay-waH, Chaugaan etc- Premchand in urdustan.
Mirza Mohd. Hadi Ruswa (1858-1931)
- Umrao Jaan Ada
One of the pioneers of Urdu novel in the modern sense of the term, Ruswa was a versatile genius.
He wrote fiction, poetry, plays, treatises on Religion, Philosophy and Astronomy. In his
celeberated Umrao Jan Ada (a novel about a courtesan) Ruswa achieved an artistic success
unequalled in his own time and for a long time afterwards
